Help Stop Elder Abuse PDF Print E-mail

Each year, June 15 is designated as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Many of our older citizens are among the most vulnerable members of our population. They are our parents, grandparents, neighbors, friends, and heroes. For their sake, please join us in the fight against the often hidden problem of elder abuse.

According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, between 700,000 and 3.5 million elders are abused, neglected, or exploited in the United States each year.

Estimates are that for each case that is reported, five go unreported. Elder abuse may be physical, emotional, sexual, or financial. Elder maltreatment may also include neglect or self-neglect.

There are many ways you can help. Most importantly, if you or someone you know is being abused or neglected, report it by calling the abuse hot line at 800-96-ABUSE (800-962-2873).

Another way you can help is to keep in contact with older friends, neighbors, and relatives and check on their well-being. If you or someone you know needs assistance with programs or services, contact the Elder Helpline at 800-96-ELDER (800-963-5337).

To learn more about the issue visit the National Center on Elder Abuse Web site at 'http://www.ncea.aoa.gov//t_blank', or contact the West Central Florida Area Agency on Aging, Inc. at 813-676-5609.

Our elders deserve to be cared for and respected, not mistreated. Thank you for joining us in confronting this important issue.
